Eye Make-up Remover Pads

I thought I would try these Eye Make-up Remover Pads as when I buy a liquid remover it runs out within a week and I don't fancy buying 4 a month.  I usually use the Purifying Cleansing Lotion to take all my make-up off but I had run out and it had been sold out for a while.  When I went to buy it again and saw it was once again out of stock I was actually just looking to pick up face wipes and was just going to use them to remove my eye make-up only.  They dry my skin out if I use them everyday but for eye make-up they would of been just fine.  Then I spotted these pads and thought I'd give them a try.  I think for the days when I just use a swipe of mascara they will be ok but I usually line my eyes and wear a few layers of black mascara.  Because the eye area is delicate, I believe you should gently press the pad on the eye and hold there for a short while before carefully wiping away the make-up.  It's like with nail varnish remover, hold it on to let it remove the product to avoid as much rubbing as possible.  At only £1.99 for 30 pads (Home Bargains) I think for a light make-up wearer these will do the job.  For me I would need to use 2+ pads and they probably wouldn't last me too long if I used them most days.  Now I have managed to repurchase the Purifying Cleansing Lotion I will use that to remove my eye make-up.

Purifying Cleansing Lotion

This is a tried and tested make-up remover for me.  It is gentle enough for my sensitive skin.  I usually squirt a penny sized amount on a cotton pad and wipe over my face and repeat until my skin is clean.  I use this product to remove my eye make-up and have not reaction to it like I do with other products near my eyes.  I would thoroughly recommend this to those with sensitive skin.  I buy mine from Home Bargains were they charge £1.99 for it, that is why it is usually out of stock but Superdrug usually have it on offer.  Sometimes I stock up on a 2-4-1 or 3-4-2 deal.  Sainsbury's had a deal on recently so I shop around.

Soothing Facial Toner

After cleansing, I apply this toner to a cotton pad and wipe it over my face.

Hydrating Light Moisturiser

I have started using this light moisturiser underneath my make-up as it soaks in well and does not take my make-up off like heavier ones do.  I use a heavier moisturiser at night if my skin is feeling dry.  This Simple moisturiser should be ideal for my sensitive skin and it doesn't leave my face shiny.  My skin is feeling drier but I think I will stick with this and do an exfoliating scrub once a week and use my favourite heavy moisturiser Nivea Soft each night and see if that helps.

Vital Vitamin Foaming Cleanser

I have recently discovered this foaming cleanser.  It was on offer in Superdrug and as I am a fan of the Simple skincare range, I thought I would try it.  I love it! I take my eye make-up off first and then, with my face make-up still on, I wet my face and pump two squirts of the foam on to my hands.  I rub the foam cleanser onto my face avoiding my eyes and then rinse off.  It removes all traces of my make-up and leaves my skin feeling very clean.  It does tighten slightly so I always follow with moisturiser as I don't like that sensation.  My skin perked up after using only a week.  I don't use it everyday as some days I like to use the Purifying Cleansing Lotion.  I like both equally so I switch between the two.  I would thoroughly recommend this Foaming Cleansing.

August shopping haul

I fancied a little shop to treat myself as I have been really good lately and there were a few things I needed.

There were a few things I wanted to try from the beauty vlogs I've been watching on YouTube and as I was running low on moisturiser, blotting powder etc I took the first option to go and try some new products! 

I visited Home Bargains, Boots and Superdrug for my beauty and make-up purchases.  If I was shopping for high end beauty I would be picking them up from John Lewis.  They have a great beauty department in the Liverpool store and now sell Mac and Urban Decay products online.  Debenhams and Harvey Nichols Beauty Bazaar are also popular destinations for make-up and skincare in the city.  I like the set up in Debenhams and they sell Bare Minerals.  The HN Beauty Bazaar is a little cramped but they have Nars and Mac counters.  In the Met Quarter, another shopping centre in Liverpool, they have a Mac and an Illamasqua. 

I enjoyed my day shopping, I don't do it often so I pottered round and picked up a few things I fancied including clothes and accessories which I will cover first.

Forever 21

The age 21 is a mere memory now.  When I visited Forever 21 in NYC in 2010 I thought it was great and I was so excited when I heard it was to open a huge store in Liverpool in 2013.  I think I remember the NYC store more fondly due to it being such a fantastic trip.  I did pick up a leatherette mini skirt with a lace trim there which I bring out each winter, which I love.  I haven't found anything similar in the Liverpool branch.  I don't think it's my style.  It's a cross between Primark quality and prices with a Topshop style customer if that makes sense.  I don't usually go in as I've converted to quality over quantity now but every now and again I'll take a stroll through.  This particular day I spotted these cute little pouches to pop in my bag which I can keep things in that I want to find quickly and keep clean like my iPhone headphones, work swipe card, hair ties and clips.  I liked the pink and black equally and for only £3.50 each I bought both.  I might keep both or give one as a gift.  They make great stocking fillers for friends too.  They're cute aren't they? (Sorry for the early Christmas reference.  I don't shop early but if I spot something like that then I do pick them up.  Usually I start doing that Sept/October time. I walked into Card Factory this week and did a double take at the Christmas card display - it's August!  Clearly when August finishes and back to school is over the Christmas countdown begins).

Marks and Spencer

I know I will always find something I like in M&S.  The quality is great, most clothing items I've bought from there are machine washable and some are pretty stylish.  Obviously M&S are a go to for the basics.  I needed a pair of black skinny jeans for the autumn winter season.  I love my dark blue M&S skinnies and I have worn my lighter wash, ripped denim from their Limited Collection this summer quite a bit too.  These jeans fit well and claim to retain their dark colour.  From working in fashion retail for so long I know all too well not to use fabric softener when washing denim, not to tumble dry or hang over a radiator.  M&S denim CAN be tumble dried!  I love the smell of my clothes freshly washed and warm from the dryer.  I personally don't like the smell after drying on the line even though it costs nothing. 

I picked up a cream silky camisole from M&S too.  I need one to wear underneath my gold sequinned jacket and also for under my kimonos.  I know I'll use it this a lot.  If they have a black one I will probably nip back and get that one too.  If the sun doesn't return a black version will be of even more use especially with the black denim I've bought.

 

 

 

 

John Lewis

I've been waiting for these cat's eyes sunglasses to get reduced in the summer sale but I've waited over 2 months and finally bought them at full price.  They are from John Lewis and are their own brand.  They have a tortoiseshell frame with black arms so will go with a lot.  They are pretty big but they make my face seem smaller and slimmer, I hope.  I know the sun will now disappear because I've bought them but I will need them on my next holiday and on the odd autumn sunny day. 

I haven't got a holiday booked but I know when I do I'll want a beautiful beach cover-up like this Seafolly neon kaftan.  I love the blue tassel trim.  It was reduced slightly but it's a pretty good price for something I'll hopefully use each holiday for years to come.  I think I will get my money's worth.  It is longer in length at the back so I could walk too and from the beach comfortably.  I think I'll be in France next May on a girls break so I'll be taking this with me.

 

 

 

 

Now for the beauty purchases..

Boots

On an Essie Button recommendation, I wanted to try the Soap & Glory One Heck of a Blot super-translucent mattifying powder.  The #essiebuttoneffect strikes again!  I like a pressed powder for on the go, especially one that includes a compact mirror.  I've used this each day since and have not had to reapply once.  Just what I was looking for, perfect.

My eyebrows have a mind of their own and are definitely not even.  I've never bothered with them before but I am trying to grow the front bits to similar size and length and then will get them shaped.  I just brush them and try and even them out with a pencil now but they still don't look right.  I picked up a clear brow gel to try and tame them somewhat.

I had ran out of a base coat for my nail varnish so I stuck to my trusty favourite, Barry M.  I use this for both base and top coats.  It's a tried and tested, fool proof product.

 

Superdrug

I went to Manchester to visit a friend a couple of weekends ago and after lunch we headed to the shops.  I had been keen to find a Superdrug that stocked the Tanya Burr range of lipglosses and the one in the Arndale centre did have a few left.  I chose the Picnic in the Park shade as I had heard a few bloggers talking about it.  I wore it this Saturday night when I went for drinks with friends and loved it especially when the comments rolled in.  It's not sticky and as the gloss fades the colour stays. 

 

Home Bargains

My usual moisturiser is a heavy one.  It smells gorgeous and feels so soft, I love it but for a day moisturiser under make-up it is too heavy.  It takes my make-up off and I have to top up foundation and/or powder.  I think I have tried a Simple light moisturiser before a few years back but I don't know if it was this one.  Anyway, I know I liked it and it did the job so I've purchased this one and have been using the last of my old moisturiser at night or as a hand or foot cream only.  I think the combination of this new light moisturiser and the new blotting powder is working a treat, my make-up is staying in place all day.

 

I thought I would try these Simple eye makeup remover pads too.

My beauty shopping list

This summer, I discovered beauty bloggers and more importantly, beauty vloggers. This is the term created for when bloggers video their content instead of (or aswell as) typing up a post on their blog. I have not tried this myself yet (my life is no way as interesting as theirs) but I am loving watching the videos on YouTube. The first vlog I found was Essie Button.

I have mentioned Estee in a previous post, she goes by the name Essie Button on social media and her vlogs have kept me entertained this summer. I am learning a lot about make-up and beauty products and picking up some useful tips and tricks. Estee also has a second vlog channel which is more lifestyle, and documents her adventures with her boyfriend Aslan and greyhound Reggie. Their vlogs are cute and funny and have me gripped. Carboot sales, dog walks and currently a road trip to and around Scandanavia. I am not selling it am I but they are hilarious, trust me! 

As I have mentioned, this year I am saving my money up and it's going well but is so boring. No holiday for me this year and much less spending. Alongside hitting the gym, I've been watching these beauty bloggers on YouTube this summer. Exciting times! Estee and co have kept me entertained.

I have always gone for a natural skin look, I like a dewy glow rather than a matte face. I prefer a natural, sunkissed shade spring to summer. For eye make-up, I usually do a sixties heavy black eyeliner and even used to do a white waterline but now I have toned it down. I have never known what to do with make-up and have never been that interested. I think a make-up lesson will be useful for me so I may book into Mac and get some tips on what will suit me. Since I've been watching the beauty vlogs, I have been dying for my make-up to run out! I can't wait to purchase some of the items the beauty bloggers have reviewed and raved about.

I would look so different. Hide the blonde in a big bun and embrace the dark side.

What a lucky girl!

I turned 27 this month and was lucky enough to receive some wonderful gifts from those who know and love me best.

I watch beauty bloggers video blogging about their make up routines and these brushes came up many times. I don't really do much eye makeup and don't do lip lining at all so as I wear foundation most days these were the brushes I most wanted to try.

Again this was something that I had heard good things about and wanted to try. I believe it was an idea put to the Dragon's Den team.

This looks a sad film but it was an Oscar, Bafta and Golden Globe nominee and Judi Dench is amazing.

I spent my 27th birthday with my family. The sun shone. I did a gym class after breakfast and presents. My birthday was listed on the board at the gym.

My family and I made a quick pit stop in Liverpool City Centre and then we took a picnic to Sefton Park. The weather was glorious and even more appreciated as the forecast had been rain up until only a few days before.

That evening my family and I ate at a pub I had heard great reviews about called The Sparrowhawk in Formby. The good was delicious, the service was friendly and the setting was perfect for a summers evening. 

I think all the weight I worked hard to lose last month has been put straight back on after my weekend in London and my birthday. Back to work and back to healthy eating and daily workouts.

A weekend in London

During my two weeks off work I went to London for a weekend.  I haven't been since January so I was really looking forward to it and had made no plans for my break from work. My friend Stacey had a spare ticket for the Barclaycard British Summertime Festival in Hyde Park which sounded fab. 

As you know from my last post, I met Stacey for cocktails in the sunshine on the Monday to celebrate finishing work for two weeks and to plan our trip.  Since then, I spent time with my family and made daily trips to the gym and enjoyed the sunshine.  I took a trip into Liverpool city centre to pick up some must haves for my trip.

Pre-London prep. It was a soaking day! I had my turquoise waterproof on and then I saw this girl in a Joules yellow waterproof with a striped lined hood and I was insanely jealous!  My Converse were soaked through so I had a look at the wellies in Primark.  Stacey had picked us both up a pair for the festival so I just tried them on to make sure of the correct size with me being an awkward in between size.

I did a proper look around Primark this day and was pleasantly surprised by the accessories. Last time I went into Primark I thought I had outgrown it and was over the place.  As I have previously mentioned, I am going for quality over quantity.  However, with accessories I can be swayed.  A mint green overnight bag caught my eye for only £8, it also comes in black.  If I traveled more I would of got both.  There was a pretty, bejeweled iPhone case for £3 which I loved but as I drop my phone and have recently cancelled the insurance, I cannot risk a non practical phone case.  I also spotted two Aztec, beaded clutch bags too which would be perfect for summer nights on holiday each and every year.  I actually only bought two gym tops which I actually went into Primark for and what I needed.  I picked up two plain vests for under my kimonos this summer.  What restraint.  Oh how sensible I am.

Next was Boots and Superdrug.  I was planning on buying a lipgloss from Smashbox but got distracted by many things.  I got the toiletries that I needed but also spotted the new Maybelline Baby Lips which has arrived finally from the US.

My favourite summer nail colour is a bright pink shade by Barry M for £2.99.  I wear this every year.  A new bottle always applies easiest and looks neater. I did a mani/pedi that night. I had planned to pay to get my nails done but this is a much cheaper way to do it of course.  I also needed travel sized products which I love buying!  I bought a teeny Original Source shower gel in the lemon and tea tree scent and as I have stopped using face wipes I just bought a mini pack with just 7 wipes in.  I used to use them all the time but they never really cleaned my skin properly.  Then I just used them when abroad because I feel they dry the skin out a bit and when I am applying suncream all day I think the wipes balance it out.  So basically I keep them for convenience.  I am actually using Simple products to clean my skin now and I will do a review and post about that soon.

London.
I met Stacey in Liverpool Lime Street early on Saturday morning and we got the direct train to London Euston.  We had a bit of an eventful journey but made it in one piece and were super exited to get to our hotel and then on to the festival in Hyde Park.  We travelled in our festival outfits which were playsuits and pumps with our bright waterproofs and changed into our little wellies at the hotel.

We stayed at a hotel right by Hyde Park.  The staff were very friendly and helpful.  When we checked into the room we thought they'd put Wimbledon on for us but it turned out the TV wouldn't switch off so later that night we had to put a towel or two over the screen to block out the light.  We were staying in the Club Room which had a double and a single bed, a fab little bathroom, I would definitely stay there again.  

The forecast had been rain on the Saturday it turned out to be mostly overcast, a little shower and a tiny bit of sunshine trying to break through.  Just incase we slicked a layer of suncream on before we headed into the park.  We took little cans of cocktails with us to drink outside on the grass and we shared those with some South African and American friends we made.

Inside we headed straight for the toilets which I was pleasantly surprised by.  Next was lunch. Alongside the music, I was looking forward to tasting some fabulous street food.  Stacey decided on some spicy paella and I got a burger and chips.  

Food!

We caught the end of the Cuban Brothers set who I've seen in Ibiza before.  They put on a show!  I'm not a huge live music fan but I recognised the names of a few of the bands and of course the headliners were Pete Doherty's band The Libertines who I was curious to see.  Bands on that day included:  The Pogues, The Enemy, Reverend and the Makers, The View.  I didn't recognise any songs unfortunately and once the alcohol started to affect people I started to enjoy myself a lot less.  Luckily, Pete Doherty did show up and came on even earlier than expected and performed a great set.  30 people were hospitalized due to the crowd serging forward when the band emerged.  I chose to stand comfortably at the side by the food stalls and which from a safe distance.  Not one bit of me wanted to go in the crowd.  I got to dance at the back and enjoy some Ol' El Paso fajitas in my own space.  In fact there was a family with a little baby in a sling were I was so you can tell how far back I'd retreated.  I'd already been made uncomfortable by a man smashed off his face and shoved metres by a couple of lads who were fighting.

Once Stacey had told me that Pete Doherty was in The Libertines and named a few of their songs I realised I actually knew and liked some of their songs.  I downloaded 4 of them and listened to them before our trip.  I read up about the band on Wikipedia and was looking forward to seeing them.  Pete Doherty looked really well, that was the first thing I thought when he came out onto the stage.  I thought he put on a great performance and came across as very caring when he kept stopping the song to check the people at the front were OK.  I thought he was adorable when he played the harmonica.

We had a little lie in on the Sunday morning and then headed out for breakfast in Patisserie Valerie.

The shops don't open in London until 12noon so we had a little wander around Carnaby Street and Regent Street.  We watched the opening of Hamley's and a dance event on the traffic free Sunday which is a great idea throughout the summer.  

Whilst in London I really wanted to visit the temporary rooftop garden at John Lewis Oxford Street.  Stacey got a Joe and the Juice and we relaxed on the deckchairs before we headed off for some more exploring.

I was curious to visit the South Bank and see the London Eye, Big Ben etc.  When in Australia I loved the Brisbane and Melbourne South Banks and found them similar to the London one with exhibitions and events happening and surprisingly sunshine.  I tried lots of chocolatey treats!

We were both so tired so headed to Euston with a bit of time to spare and relaxed in leather armchairs in the station's pub before our train departed.

I had a great weekend.  I love visiting London and can't wait to go back.

How I survived the first 5 days of the summer clearance

The first 5 days of clearance almost killed me but I kept focused on the light at the end of the tunnel - 15 days off work! 

Things that got me through clearance this year:

Chef the movie.

The day before the sale I did a workout and a few dog walks, had a raw juice from our local juice bar and then my sister and I took advantage of Orange Wednesday and went to see Chef the movie. It was brilliant. I love Jon Favreau anyway in The Break Up and his films Elf and Iron Man are two of my favourites and I was not disappointed by Chef. He plays the main character Carl Casper. Dustin Hoffman, Scarlet Johansson, Robert Downey Jr and Sofia Vergara starred alongside Jon Favreau. I would recommend it as a great summer film. This was a treat to ease me in to the sale which started Thursday.

Essie Button.

I have recently found Essie Button, she is a Canadian blogger called Estée living in London with her boyfriend Aslan and their greyhound, Reggie. Their "vlog" (video blog) channel on YouTube has kept me thoroughly entertained! They "vlogged" (video blogged) every other day in June about their days, what they got up to, reviews etc but they are so funny. I amused myself with the 15-20 min long clips most evenings whilst recovering from busy clearance days in work. 

Snacks.

As I'm eating healthier as of late I have been snacking on grapes and rice cakes. My skin has gone AWFUL! I thought it would be temporary while my body got rid of all the toxins but my sister thinks it's the rice cakes which have an affect on hormone levels. I was having a bag of snack a jacks every few days so it must of been the dark chocolate covered rice cakes I was having at the end of lunch in place of a chocolate bar. So they've been banished! I'm into week 5 of healthy eating so I thought my skin would be looking better than ever.

Reading.

Jill Mansell's book Take A Chance On Me. It's a fictional rom com that I read a few years ago and loved so I fancied reading that again and thoroughly enjoyed it once more. I love the main character Cleo and her family and friends. It's a fun story with mini storylines in there too.

Songs.

"You're just a chance I'll take" my summer song is Hideaway by Kiesza and it has been on repeat and has saved me at the end of many clearance days!

Calling All Hearts by DJ Cassidy ft Jessie J and Robin Thicke is such a happy, positive song. I love it. I can't help but dance when I hear it.

Treat tea.

After the madness of the first Saturday of clearance I bought myself a little chippy tea. Small chips, small sausage and a spoonful of curry sauce. It was delicious.

Long dog walks.

After my chippy tea, I talk my dog Louis down to the beach for an evening walk. We were out 1hr 15mins. The sky was beautiful and the way the sun streamed through the clouds made me feel emotional. That was probably more the stressful day I'd had though. I did the same dog walk again Sunday morning before work and it was lovely and sunny.

A little party never killed nobody.

On Sunday eve, I went to a party at my friend's in Liverpool. The sun was still shining and her flat opens out onto a huge terrace and was the ideal location for a party. I had a great night dancing with my friends and eating party food. I treated myself to a Pimms too.

My summer holiday.

To celebrate finishing work on Monday eve, I met up with my friend Stacey for a catch up and a cocktail in the sunshine. We luckily got a table outside the popular Las Iguanas and enjoyed a Strawberry Red cocktail each. We're going to London for the weekend so we made some plans for that. It was a lovely way to start my summer holidays. 

My sister has been home so it has been nice to spend some time with her. My family have just returned from their holiday too. 

I plan to workout most days and continue on with my healthier eating. 

This weekend I am going to London to a daytime festival in Hyde Park travelling down Saturday morning. It's on all day and has love music, tasty food and fairground rides. We are staying at a hotel close to Hyde Park. On the Sunday, I'd like to go to Wimbledon and experience the buzz on Murray Mount even though he has been knocked out now. I think we will visit Oxford St including the rooftop garden at John Lewis for a juice. I'm sure we'll have a nice lunch in London and so a bit of shopping. 

I would like to go to Alton Towers if I can this holiday, I've never been. I might book a spa break for a treat.

My birthday is coming up next week so I will have a little celebration with my family and friends.
